  Academics Steve Appleton is currently an Assistant Professor of Art in the Sculpture/New Genre Program of Otis College of Art, Los Angeles, Ca. and Design where he teaches both required major courses and electives of his own design. He received his BFA from University of California, Santa Cruz with an additional emphasis in critical studies. He received his MFA in sculpture from the University of Southern California.

  Awards Awards include: National Instruments Vision Program (2000), software and hardware support for interactive art installations, City of Los Angeles, Cultural Affairs Individual Artist Grant (1992), Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE) project grant(1990) with Deborah Oliver, PanAm Fulbright (1989) for installation and teaching project in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

  Recent Exhibitions "Cubic Conversation" (2002), curated by Brandon LaBell at Southern California Institute of Architecture, small package interactive hardware device that records and plays back sounds in a variety of ways to stimulate social games, ad hoc sample music and communication. Collaboration with Rolf Von Widenfelt.

"SuperOrganic",(2002) digital projection installation, Armory Installational curated by Jay Belloli at the Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena, California.

“Water word poems”,(2002) polycarbonate water wheel installated in LA River as part of River Alchemy exhibition.

“About Face II”(2001), as part of Art in Motion, International New Media Festival, Santa Monica Museum of Art, Santa Monica, California.

"Charm Offensive"(2000), large scale interactive computer projection, Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles, Ca. Curated by Yong Soon Min.

"A Limited Edition of 50 Bottles of Clean LA River Water"(2000), Site specific kinetic water filteration project in the Los Angeles River with John Lilly.


  Selected Public Projects "Face/Time Sculpture" (2003), large scale roof top interactive digital projection project to be installed at Sunset and Vine, Hollywood, California.

"Good Microbes" (2003), teaching and public art project involving live video projection of wetland single celled organisms as a source for teaching and a site specific public art work at an elementary school. Collaboration with Japanese artist Yutaka Kobayashi.

"Nexus" (2001) 200' cast concrete mural project, collaboration with Yong Soon Min in Chinatown, Los Angeles, California. (in progress)

"City Imprint" (1995), Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority Metro Green Line Harbor Station, includes major architectural artworks, total of thirty site specific architecturally integrated artworks.
